首都博物馆是北京地区大型综合性博物馆，属中国省市级综合性博物馆。首都博物馆于1953年开始筹备，1981年10月正式对外开放。当时的馆址位于北京市东城区国子监街孔庙内。孔庙占地2.2万平方米， 创建于元代大德六年(公元1302年)，经历代修葺，三进院落保存完整。主体建筑有先师门、大成门、大成殿、崇圣祠等。明、清进士题名碑林为国内仅有。两侧殿庑辟作展厅，面积2000余平方米，环境幽雅宁静。
